Average premium increases by insurer by year

This page provides information about average private health insurance premium increases by insurer by year.

Page last updated: 19 December 2018

Please note an individual’s product premium increase may be above or below the industry’s or their insurer’s average increase. Insurers inform their members in writing of the exact premium increase for their particular policy.

While the figures represent the average premium increase, this is not indicative of what every consumer may experience. Some products may offer either a lower or a higher increase.

The government is permitting insurers to offer youth based discounts to encourage younger people to join private health insurance. If an insurer has introduced this reform measure as part of its suite of products available from 1 April 2019, then some policy holders will receive a reduction in their premium of up to 10 per cent.

Insurers inform their members in writing of the exact premium increase which will apply for their particular policy. The Rebate Adjustment Factor used to adjust premium rebate rates cannot be calculated until after the December quarter CPI figures are released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in late January 2019. As a result, insurers will be unable to provide definitive information to their policy holders regarding changes to premium levels until this time.

* If you can pay your health insurance premiums in advance, some insurers will offer a rate protection. With rate protections, if premium rates are increased within the period you have already paid for your insurance, you will not have to pay increased rates until that period ends. If you do not have rate protection, the insurer will ask you to pay the balance owing on the new rates, or reduce the length of time your advance payment covers.
