GP Workforce Statistics – 2001-02 to 2016-17

Revision of Full-time Service Equivalent (FSE) time series

This update provides revised figures for the full time-series of FSE figures from 2000-01 to 2016-17 and replaces the previously published series.

A code error that affected the FSE figures released in 2016-17 has been corrected. The error resulted in double counting of a group of fast-growing items. Consequently the published FSE figures were inflated. Headcount figures were minimally affected.

The revised figures differ from figures previously published as they also reflect Derived Major Specialty (DMS) classification changes since 2015-16.

The revised series replaces the previously published figures, which should no longer be used.

The statistics are presented by State and Territory, Remoteness Area Classification, General Practitioner’s (GP’s) gender, GP’s age group, GP’s type, and place where GP’s basic qualification was obtained, for financial year 2000-01 and onwards.

Information coverage:
    • GP head count
    • Full-time Service Equivalent (FSE)
    • Number of services
    • MBS Benefit paid
