The Australian Government is providing $11m of funding for innovative activities which will provide a national strategic and coordinated response to support radiotherapy workforce issues relevant over the next decade. This funding forms part of the Better Access to Radiation Oncology Budget Measure.

The Department of Health and Ageing is seeking applications for funding to develop and implement innovative workforce activities.

Proposals will need to demonstrate how they:

  • aim to benefit radiation oncology treatment capacity nationally;
  • establish linkages to existing radiation oncology workforce initiatives; and
  • take into account a ten year horizon.
The objective of the funding round is to provide opportunities for the development and implementation of activities that demonstrate new and innovative approaches to radiation oncology workforce issues. Additionally, activities to be funded will aim to contribute to the growth in demand for cancer services and the corresponding need for workforce in new radiation oncology facilities.

In addition to this, interested parties may wish to consider:
  • the 2009 Consultancy Report Radiation Oncology Workforce Planning undertaken for the Australian Government on behalf of HealthConsult Pty Ltd; and
  • the Radiation Oncology Reform Implementation Committee’s 2011 Workforce Reform Framework that has been developed to assist all Australian jurisdictions and other relevant stakeholders with workforce planning for the next decade.

Both the above documents are available by contacting the Radiation Oncology Section.
