Estimates and Projections of the Hepatitis C Virus Epidemic in Australia 2006
This report provides estimates and projections to inform an appropriate public health response to the hepatitis C virus epidemic in Australia, both in terms of preventive measures and treatment needs.
This report updates and expands upon the estimates and projections of the last report in 2002 in several important areas:
- Better estimates of numbers of injecting drug users, with particular reference to the effect of the reduction in heroin supply in Australia from 2000 onwards
- Estimates of people who have migrated to Australia from countries with a high hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence
- Estimated numbers of HCV infections among Indigenous Australians
- Models of long-term sequelae of HCV infection calibrated against external, population based numbers of observed events among people diagnosed with HCV
- Models allowing for effective combination antiviral treatment and the effect of expanding this treatment on projections of long-term outcomes.
