CR&C adopted a multi-faceted approach to the project, using both qualitative and quantitative methods to measure community and health professionals' attitudes towards palliative care.

Qualitative research for the project included:

  • 10 focus groups with members of the general community;
  • 3 in-depth interviews with carers and families;
  • 2 focus groups with palliative care professionals;
  • 3 in-depth interviews with palliative care specialists;
  • 3 in-depth interviews with palliative care association representatives; and
  • 3 in-depth interviews with other health providers who refer to palliative care services.
Quantitative research included:
  • A telephone survey of the Australian population;
  • A telephone survey of people employed in the palliative care sector; and
  • A blind-mail survey of consumers of palliative care and their families and carers.

This Report

This report brings together the findings of all stages of the research described above. Findings based on qualitative and quantitative research components for the Australian community and palliative care providers have been integrated in this report, and have been presented side-by-side. Note that in a number of the figures in this report, the term 'palliative care' has been abbreviated to PC.
