Local Palliative Care Grants Program

Information about the components of the Local Palliative Care Grants Program.

The Local Palliative Care Program funds organisations to provide improved care and support to people requiring palliative care and their families in their communities.

The Australian Government has provided funding of over $34 million (2005-2011) to better support palliative care patients and their families.

Five competitive funding rounds have been held so far:

The first round of funding provided assistance with fit-out and equipping premises for palliative care and supporting transition-to-home. Fifty-five projects were funded nationally, with amounts for individual projects ranging from $30,000 to $100,000.

The second round provided funding to improve pastoral care, counselling and support services. Thirty-two organisations received funding of between $30,000 and $120,000 for projects.

The third round support improved care planning for people receiving palliative care at home. Thirty-three organisations received funding of between $100,000 and $250,000.

The fourth round was for assistance with fit-out, equipping premises for palliative care and supporting transition-to-home initiatives.

Funding under these four rounds have been completed.

The fifth round of funding was for projects with a focus on innovative approaches to palliative care for people with a mental illness, Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Twenty-one organisations are receiving funding of between $271,000 and $600,000.

The sixth round of funding is to assist organisations with funds of up to $150,000 (GST exclusive) to purchase equipment and to fitout premises to improve access to high quality palliative services.
