Information about the GP Super Clinics in Western Australia

The Commonwealth has committed to establishing two GP Super Clinics in Western Australia located at Midland and Wanneroo. The Western Australian Government has agreed to match the Commonwealth’s funding to establish these GP Super Clinics.

The Clinics align with Western Australia's health reform agenda and will better integrate services across the continuum of care and reduce the burden on hospitals.

Summary of local information and consultation meeting for the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic held on Tuesday, 19 August 2008

In accordance with the Government’s election commitments, funding of up to $5 million has been made available to establish a GP Super Clinic at Wanneroo through a joint process with the Government of Western Australia. The Government of Western Australia has committed to providing up to $5 million, bringing the total funding available to $10 million. A competitive Commonwealth led Invitation to Apply process will be used, with participation by the Western Australian Government.

The local information and consultation meeting for the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic was held at the Bridgeleigh Reception Centre and was attended by approximately 100 participants.

The meeting commenced with opening remarks from Mr Luke Simpkins MP, Federal Member for Cowan and a Welcome to Country by Mr Kim Collard, Representative of the Nyoongar People. Presentations were then given by a panel that consisted of:
    • The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Minister for Health and Ageing;
    • Dr Peter Flett, Acting Director-General, Western Australian Department of Health; and
    • Mr Lou Andreatta, Assistant Secretary, Practice Support Branch, Department of Health and Ageing, Commonwealth Government.
During the meeting, participants identified the following services as desirable for the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic:
    • Midwifery services;
    • Occupational therapy services;
    • Pharmacy services;
    • Mental health services; and
    • Geriatric care services.
The following issues were raised during the meeting:
    • Accessibility issues, including the strong preference for the clinic to be located centrally within the Wanneroo township and the need to consider community transport to and from the clinic;
    • Hours of operation for the clinic and the relationship with existing after-hours services;
    • The roles and functions of GP’s, nurse practitioners and allied health practitioners in a model of team-based multidisciplinary care; and
    • Viability of the GP Super Clinic.
Broader health themes were also discussed at the meeting, including
    • Health workforce issues; and
    • Education and training of medical students and graduates into the future.

The meeting commenced with opening remarks from Ms Sharryn Jackson MP, Federal Member for Hasluck and a Welcome to Country by Mr Noel Nannup, an Elder of the Nyoongar people. Presentations were then given by a panel that consisted of:
    • The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Minister for Health and Ageing;
    • Dr Peter Flett, Acting Director-General, Western Australian Department of Health; and
    • Mr Lou Andreatta, Assistant Secretary, Practice Support Branch, Department of Health and Ageing, Commonwealth Government.
The following issues were raised during the meeting:
    • Access to bulk billing;
    • The composition and structure of potential staffing arrangements;
    • The physical location; and
    • Viability of the GP Super Clinic.
Broader health themes were also discussed at the meeting, including:
    • Workforce and training;
    • Training programs for multi-disciplinary team based care available from Western Australian education and training institutions; and
    • Health system reforms.
