Comment from Dr Graham Aldous

I fully support the comments of Prof. Michael Roberts and express my concern that the proposed changes may not incorporate quality and safety safeguards currently required by international regulatory authorities.

I have over 30 years experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry, having joined an Australian owned pharmaceutical company, Hamilton Pharmaceutical Pty Ltd (till recently a major manufacturer of sunscreens in Australia), as Research Manager, after attaining my PhD in physical organic chemistry at the Flinders University of South Australia. My work at Hamilton included the supervision all internal product formulation and research and external collaborative research conducted by the company. In 2000 I was invited to join the Board of Hamilton as Director of Scientific Affairs with Quality Assurance and Research reporting directly to him. In 20111 joined the University of South Australia as a Senior lecturer. I have been a member of the Royal Australian Society of Chemistry for over three decades and am a member and past President of the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

My relevant experience with sunscreen formulation includes:

  • 30 years formulation experience of sunscreens
  • ASMI (Australian Self Medication Industry) Sunscreen Committee
  • Standards Australia, Substitute Committee Member of CS-042 (Sunscreens) and Member of UVA Working Group
  • Council Member of the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists, President of Society (1998-2000.)
  • Speaker at national and international conferences and seminars on sunscreen formulation and research.

Yours sincerely

Graham Aldous PhD, BSc (Hons), MRACI, CChem
