Shepparton
The community consultation in Shepparton was held on Tuesday 13 November 2012. Thirty-three members of the community attended, which included representatives from health service providers, aboriginal co-operatives, peak bodies, educational and research institutions, and government amongst others. Some key themes arising from group discussions included the need to address systemic racism within services and systems, the importance of ensuring coordination of care and culturally appropriate services, and the need for holistic care. Participants noted the strong links between education and long term health, the importance of ensuring links between schools and communities, and the need for the school curriculum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history and present it in a culturally appropriate way. Education both within and outside of the school system was noted as particularly important for young people. The role that Aboriginally Controlled Community Health Organisations can play in the design and delivery of services was also discussed.
