Port Augusta

The community consultation in Port Augusta was held on Wednesday, 15 November 2012. Twenty-two members of the Port Augusta and surrounding areas community, including Port Pirie and Whyalla, participated in the consultation session and were welcomed by the Minister for Indigenous Health, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP. A number of key themes emerged from the discussions including the importance of service integration and coordination of care; the need to create greater employment pathways to facilitate Aboriginal representation in the health workforce; and the need to ensure parents are supported to be better engaged in their children’s schooling. Ageing and aged care was raised as a particular area of concern with participants noting the need to deliver culturally sensitive palliative care; and the need for innovative solutions for attracting older workers. Participants also emphasised the importance of providing inclusive and culturally safe services within the family and community context across the entire life-cycle.
