The community consultation in Tasmania was held in Launceston on Friday, 9 November 2012. Fifteen members of the community, health and other service sector from Tasmania, including members from the Flinders Islands, participated in the consultation session. A number of key themes emerged from the discussions including cultural competency of the workforce and the need to clearly define what this means, the need for greater health literacy and the importance of investing in early intervention and prevention, particularly for chronic disease prevention. Local history and Aboriginal identity in Tasmania arose as a key theme particularly for young Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples, with participants highlighting the importance of identity and sense of self and the impacts on resilience. The participants also emphasised the need for nation-wide recognition of the existence and impacts of racism and discrimination.Program/Initiatives
