Summary of the NATSIHP consultation in Broome

The consultations for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan (the Health Plan) are currently underway. This page will be updated with the latest news and highlights from the consultations as they progress.

Broome

The community consultation in Broome was held on Monday 10 December 2012. 60 members of the community and broader surroundings, including Fitzroy Crossing and Derby, participated in the consultation. The Minister for Indigenous Health, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP also attended the consultation. The key themes from the consultation included the prevalence and impact of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in this region, as well as the importance of family centered approaches, including the role of fathers during pregnancy, birth and the early years in supporting their partners to engage in healthy behaviors, the importance of sexual and reproductive education to support young people to make informed decisions, sustainable yet flexible Government funding to meet  the needs of the community, the importance of attracting and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to the health workforce, the importance of providing culturally sensitive health care and using school as a capture point for health messaging and interventions, with the need for schools and the health system to work better together to deliver holistic services to young people and their families.
