The Secretary, Jane Halton, and staff of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing are shocked at the news of the brutal assault on Dr Mukesh Haikerwal which has left him in a very serious condition.

Dr Halkerwal, a former President of the Australian Medical Association and current member of the government's Health and Hospital Reform Commission, is one of Australia's most respected medical and public health advocates. His involvement in public health reform spans many areas of the health system where he has championed the cause of better health care for all Australians. His efforts to improve the health status of Indigenous Australians stands out among his many achievements.

The Department sends its very best wishes to Dr Haikerwal and his family at this most distressing time.
