Forums were held in each capital city, as well as Mandurah (WA), Newcastle and Tamworth (NSW), Launceston (Tas), Cairns and Atherton (Qld).
At these forums, Minister Butler heard first hand about the experiences and views of mental health consumers and carers including options for progressing mental health reform into the future. A summary of the outcomes of the forums was published by MHCA.

Minister Butler also heard views from young people during an online forum hosted by the Inspire Foundation on 8 December 2010.In addition, members of the public and interested organisations were invited to provide written submissions, by 15 February 2011, about future mental health reform options via the Australian Government mental health and wellbeing website.
Common themes reported by mental health consumers and carers included the need for better coordination between government and non government services, and better integration of health and social support services, including housing, health, income support, education and employment services. Many also reported issues around ongoing stigma and discrimination.
