less in this sectionAn interim Discussion Document was released in December 1998 which reflected the extensive consultation with stakeholders and experts in Australia and overseas undertaken by the Review Committee and consideration of 220 submissions to the Review. The Final Report has been prepared after considering comments from 1,500 individuals and organisations that contributed their views during the discussion period.

The document makes recommendations in the following areas:
- Initiatives to promote an effective health and medical research sector built on high impact fundamental research, and world-class workforce and infrastructure
- Development of priority-driven research that constributes directly to population health and evidence-based health care
- Requirements for an industry sector that mutually reinforces the research sector
- The role of public investment in a well-managed research sector.
The Review has been well received by the research sector, industry and government. The Review Committee is particularly pleased with the positive response it has received from the Federal Government.
In his introduction to the Final Report the Minister for Health and Aged Care, The Hon Dr Michael Wooldridge stated:
"I am delighted to receive formally this Final Report of the Health and Medical Research Strategic Review Committee, which the Federal Government commissioned in March 1998.
The Final Report follows the public release of an interim discussion document last December which made detailed and practical recommendations based on extensive public consultation and expert analysis in Australia and overseas.
The Final Report also reflects the subsequent consultation and discussion that occurred, in particular the extensive interest of the medical research community, industry representatives and other interested parties as well as the wider community.
I have no doubt that this Final Report, which maps out an exciting future for Australia in health and medical research, will create further intense interest. The Federal Government will thoroughly consider and promptly act on the issues raised in the report.
I congratulate Peter Wills, the Review Committee and the Secretariat for their dedication and excellent work.
In the years ahead, this report will rightly be seen as a crucial element in ushering in a new era in Australia health and medical research and the development of a vibrant biotechnology industry for this country."
