7.4: Industry development and international health

The 1997-1998 Portfolio Budget Statements, informs Senators and Members of Parliament of the proposed allocation of resources to portfolios outcomes and their objectives and targets including the agencies within the Health and Family Services portfolio.

Budget Measures

Objective

To strengthen Australia's bilateral and multilateral relationships in the health sector to advance domestic policy interests.

To improve the Department's appreciation of industry issues and reduce the regulatory burden on business.

Priority outcomes

  1. Improved export opportunities for the health sector through effective bilateral and multilateral liaison and the strengthening of domestic industry networks.
  2. Australian interests pursued through participation in the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  3. Business regulation in the portfolio that achieves its objectives with minimal burden on business and competitiveness.

Strategies

  1. Consolidate relationships with targeted regional countries and multilateral financial institutions to promote Australian health sector competencies.
  2. Work in partnership with the Australian Health Industry Development Forum and other agencies to improve industry networking and export orientation.
  3. Identify and undertake projects for the export of departmental services and expertise.
  4. Participate strategically in the governance of WHO to promote a continuing process of reform and achievement of Australia's objectives.
  5. Provide an effective and focussed administration for the Australian component of the WHO fellowship program.
  6. Develop and implement a framework for regulatory review within the Department, and undertake a rolling program of reviews.
  7. Improve the Department's measurement of regulatory best practice.
