Better health and ageing for all Australians

1996-1997

Portfolio Mission

The 1996-97 Portfolio Budget Statements, informs Senators and Members of Parliament of the proposed allocation of resources to portfolios outcomes and their objectives and targets including the agencies within the Health and Family Services portfolio.

The services provided by the Health and Family Services Portfolio are delivered through seven Programmes and their various Sub-Programmes.

The Department of Health and Family Services pursues the Portfolio's Programme Objectives in association with other agencies in the Portfolio, primarily the Health Insurance Commission, the Australian Hearing Services, the Australia New Zealand Food Authority, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

The Department of Health and Family Services has a diverse set of responsibilities, but throughout there is a common purpose, which is reflected in this mission statement:

    We provide policy advice and we implement Government policies on public health, health care, health care funding, and family services for all Australians, particularly the aged, people with disabilities and those with children
As national leaders in health and family services and public health measures we:
  • provide expert policy advice and analysis to government;
  • promote planning by governments focussed on outcomes and investment in prevention and early intervention, and incentives for efficient, best practice care;
  • work in partnership with others to deliver high quality, cost-effective care designed to meet people's needs better;
  • work closely across programmes to ensure the focus is on people and outcomes rather than programmes and providers; and
  • ensure that, where we have a regulatory role, we perform it sensitively and objectively.
