Physical Activity
Welcome to the Physical Activity web page. This part of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing website provides information on physical activity and health.
Regular physical activity has many health benefits and plays an important role in promoting healthy weight. It can help prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, and also improve psychological well-being.The National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians outline the minimum levels of physical activity required for health benefits and ways to incorporate physical activity into everyday life.
About us
The Obesity and Physical Activity Section of the Population Health Division in the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing is responsible for the promotion of health-enhancing physical activity to improve the health and well-being of the Australian population. There is strong consistent epidemiological evidence linking a wide range of important health and social benefits to participation in regular moderate-intensity physical activity. To date the Department has commissioned a number of research reports, projects and surveys to better understand physical activity participation in the population, in addition to implementing intervention projects to improve health through regular physical activity.
