Appointment of Acting Private Health Insurance Ombudsman

Ms Samantha Gavel has resigned her position as the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO) to take up an appointment as the National Health Practitioner Ombudsman and Privacy Commissioner.

Mr David McGregor has been appointed to the role of acting PHIO until 30 June 2015.

From 1 July 2015, the PHIO functions will be merged into the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman, as part of the Smaller Government 2014-15 Budget measures.

Mr McGregor brings considerable industry knowledge and expertise to the role. He has been with the PHIO Office since 2000 and has worked at a senior level for a number of years. Mr McGregor has performed a range of roles in the Ombudsman’s Office, including dispute resolution, and has qualifications in public policy and governance.

As acting PHIO, Mr McGregor’s responsibilities include investigating and conciliating complaints relating to privately insured health care, providing advice to the health insurance industry, the Government and consumers, and publishing independent information about private health insurance and the performance of health funds.
