We would like to take this opportunity to remind all declared hospitals (both public and private) of their obligations in regards to the submission of certain hospital data.

All declared hospitals (both public and private) are required to provide Hospital Casemix Protocol (HCP) data to private health insurers.

Private hospitals are, in addition, required to submit Private Hospital Data Bureau (PHDB) data to the Australian Government Department of Health (the Department).

These requirements are specified in the Private Health Insurance (Health Insurance Business) Rules 2017 under the Private Health Insurance Act 2007.

Private hospitals include all declared private hospitals, including a range of day facilities and clinics that might not be commonly thought of as private hospitals.

Data specifications can be found at the following links:

The Department expects all public and private hospitals to provide a complete set of HCP data (including clinical information) to private health insurers, as per the data specifications.

If you require further information or would like to confirm whether your facility is one declared under the Private Health Insurance Act and Rules please telephone (02) 6289 8058 or email the HCP/PHDB inbox at HCP@health.gov.au
