National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
Australian Government Implementation Plan 2003 - 2008

The Australian Government Implementation Plan 2003-2008 details information on existing and planned action by the Australian Government, and its contribution to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians over the next five years. Monitoring and reporting of the Implementation Plan are also available on this page.

In July 2003 the Australian Health Ministers’ Conference (AHMC) endorsed the National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health 2003-2013. Each jurisdiction committed to developing implementation plans against the National Strategic Framework, and to report annually on activity against the plans. The Australian Government Implementation Plan 2003-2008 details information on existing and planned action by the Australian Government, and its contribution to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians over the next five years. It describes programs and policy approaches which are the primary responsibility of the Australian Government as well as areas where the Australian Government is contributing to multilateral effort.

Monitoring and Reporting

The Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC) agreed to monitor implementation of the National Strategic Framework over the next decade. AHMAC will ensure that appropriate liaison and collaboration occurs with officials from other departments to progress cross-portfolio initiatives.

AHMAC will report to Health Ministers annually on progress in meeting the health portfolio objectives of this National Strategic Framework and will coordinate publicly available reports for Health Ministers on action within health and non-health portfolios every two years.

The 2004-2005 implementation report covers the Commonwealth, State and Territory health portfolios. Currently the report only covers Commonwealth progress. State and Territory reports will be added when available.
