Research Gaps in Indigenous Sexual Health - Establishing Evidence-Based Best Practice for Social and Behavioural Interventions: Technical Report

This technical report establishes evidence based best practice for social and behavioural interventions

In this section:

This technical report reviewed the literature to try and establish best practice in social and behavioural interventions in Indigenous sexual health. The report is a useful resource of what is effective in sexual health promotion in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health context.

The scope of the review was limited to Indigenous-specific Australian literature published between 1990 and 2004.

Three kinds of interventions were focused on namely:

    • Behavioural interventions;
    • Social interventions; and
    • Clinical interventions with a socio-cultural component.
The Research Gaps in Indigenous Sexual Health Technical Report formed the basis for a community guide ‘Sexual Health Promotion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People – a community guide to evidence-based best practice in social and behavioural interventions’. This guide is intended for use by Aboriginal health workers.
