Joint Communique

In recognition of the growing significance of dementia as a health and social issue, Health Ministers today agreed to progress the development of a National Framework for Action on Dementia.

The aim of the Framework will be to enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia, their families and carers and where possible, prevent or delay the onset of dementia.

The National Framework will be an opportunity for shared learning, the development of best practice models of care across jurisdictional boundaries and the adoption of a strategic, collaborative and cost–effective response to dementia.

A Discussion Paper will be developed for consultation that will focus on five key priority areas:
  • Research
  • Information and Education
  • Access and Equity
  • Quality, integration and continuum of care
  • Workforce development and training
Health Ministers agreed today that national consultation would take place between May and July 2005 and that they would consider the Draft Framework for Action on Dementia towards the end of 2005.
