Graduate Program

Our Graduate Program

Information about our Graduate Development Program.

What is the Graduate Development Program?

The Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a 12 month full time program, with the following core components:
  • a comprehensive induction;
  • a minimum of three rotations;
  • a suite of formal off-the-job training; and
  • advancement to an APS4 classification upon successful completion of the program.
The majority of graduate positions are located at the Departments Central Office in Canberra. Positions in State Office are limited and restricted to the demands of the Department.

What we offer

We offer a dynamic work environment and a diverse and challenging career path. The GDP provides you with the opportunity to develop great skills, knowledge and networks required to kick start a rewarding career in the Department, as well as interesting work and development opportunities including:
  • three diverse workplace rotations throughout different areas of the Department;
  • on-the-job training; and
  • a comprehensive training program.
After successful completion of the program, you will have a permanent role within the Department of Health and Ageing.

What do grads get to do?

Our graduates undertake three workplace rotations over the 12 month period. Rotations may be in areas such as:
  • policy development;
  • program management;
  • corporate management; and
  • A Health Portfolio Minister’s Office (an additional selection process is required upon successful entry into the GDP).
Our graduates get to undertake a lot of interesting work including:
  • conducting research and analysis for reports ranging from literary background to working with budgets for major projects;
  • preparing briefing material for conferences and ministerial visits;
  • applying legislation;
  • analysing and evaluating policy;
  • working on briefings, speeches, reports, letters, ministerials and minutes;
  • liaising with State and Territory Offices;
  • supporting project and contract management in preparing tenders;
  • undertaking secretariat work including attending meetings interstate; and
  • Working with other graduates to organise events and networking opportunities.

Training

A program of timely, relevant and structured formal training has been developed to ensure graduates receive key training opportunities during the GDP.

Graduates must attend all compulsory internal training before they can successfully complete the GDP and be advanced to an APS4. Graduates are responsible for managing their attendance at the compulsory events.
