NHCDC (Round 7) 2002 - 2003 Peer Group Package
Report of the results from Round 7 of the National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) for financial year from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003.
Introduction
This Peer Group Package has been created to report the results from Round 7 of the National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) for financial year from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003. During this period, the jurisdictions coded to ICD-10-AM and grouped to version 4.2 of the AR-DRG Classification. The Peer Group Package is based on Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) peer groups. The Department of Health and Ageing trusts that this publication will prove an effective tool for comparing costs and activity data within groups of like hospitals, which could not otherwise be done solely with the State or National figures published in the NHCDC Cost Report Round 7 (2002-2003).
Below are the subsections of the Peer Group Package:
Introduction
Peer Group A1
- List of hospitals, comparison of weighted separations and average cost per AR-DRG and component costs (PDF 18 KB)
- Cost Weights (Excel 273 KB)
Peer Group A2

- Cost Weights (Excel 293 KB)
Peer Group A9
There is no sample hospital in this Peer Group.

Notes
- This publication has been produced by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing based on the Peer groups defined by the AIHW. These definitions are tabulated in Table1. All results have been produced at an aggregate level to ensure the data does not clearly identify a particular hospital.
- The number of hospitals contributing column in the cost weight report depicts the number of hospitals in that peer group that contributed to the data for a given DRG.
- All the data within peer groups are sample data from contributing hospitals unless otherwise specified.
- Hospitals with less than 200 acute separations or classed as same day facilities were excluded from both sample and population hospitals.
- All DRGs that had less than 5 separations have not been reported in order to protect the identity of the participating hospitals and the confidentiality of patients involved. These DRGs are marked '******' in the cost weights tables.
- If the number of contributing hospitals for a particular DRG is less than three, then that data has been suppressed in order to protect the identity of the participating hospitals. These DRGs are marked '------' in the cost weights tables.
- If the number of separations for a particular DRG is less than 5 and if the number of contributing hospitals for that DRG is less than three, then these DRGs are marked '******' and the 'no of Hosp' cell for the particular DRG is marked '------' in the cost weights tables.
- Some component costs recorded a negative value in the D1 peer group, due to small hospital numbers and small number of separations within the peer group.
- Care should be taken when comparing average costs between the public and private sectors as cost components differ between sectors.
- Slight differences occur between tables due to rounding and different estimation variables used in sectors.
