Australians celebrate International Day of Older Persons

International Day of Older Persons - October 1 - gives the whole community an opportunity to recognise and applaud the achievements and on-going contribution made by seniors in Australia.

"October 1 is a day where we can say thank you to the 'trailblazers' of the past who have made this country what it is today," the Federal Minister for Family Services, the Hon Judi Moylan MP said in Perth today.

"And just as importantly, October 1 is a reminder to us all, young and old, that older Australians have an on-going role in our community and family life".

Speaking at the inaugural Western Australian "Seniors Media Awards" (see separate media statement) Mrs Moylan launched the "Older Australians: promoting health and well-being" folder.

The folder contains detailed information about 13 projects funded by the Federal Government.

These projects, announced earlier this year, provide a range of healthy ageing opportunities for older Australians, including the Out and About project in WA for women over 50. This project aims to improve the knowledge of and access to community activities such as exercise, networking, yoga and volunteering.

Another activity receiving funding is the Wiser Driver project in Victoria which provides a refresher course in driving for older people.

"The folder highlights the range of projects undertaken and also provides contact details so any interested person can find out more about these projects.

"I'm confident the package will become a valuable resource for both older people and organisations working with them".
