Progress to date of the Elective Surgery Waiting List Reduction Plan

When was the Elective Surgery Waiting List Reduction Plan announced?

On 14 January 2008, the Minister for Health and Ageing the Hon Nicola Roxon MP, announced funding for Stage One of the Elective Surgery Waiting List Reduction Plan in a series of media releases. The media releases can be accessed in the Media Centre.

When did the plan start?

Implementation of the plan started in January 2008.

When will the plan be completed?

The plan will run until the end of June 2011.

What is happening now?

Stage One
At a meeting of Health Ministers and Treasurers on 14 January 2008, Ministers agreed on the distribution of funding for Stage One.

All states and territories have received their total allocated funding for Stage One of the Plan.

Stage Two
On 24 May 2008, the Commonwealth Government announced Stage Two funding allocations to states and territories.

Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory have all received their total allocated funding under Stage Two of the Plan.

All other jurisdictions have received their total allocated funding for 2008-09, with further funding to be provided in 2009-10.

Stage Three
The Commonwealth Government will be working closely with the states and territories to develop and implement Stage Three of the Plan. Consultations are expected to commence in the near future.
