Diagnostic Imaging

Introduction of a New Accreditation Scheme for Practices providing Diagnostic Imaging Services

In June 2007, legislation was enacted to amend the Health Insurance Act 1973 to enable a diagnostic imaging accreditation scheme to be established. The scheme commences on 1 July 2008 and covers all diagnostic imaging services except cardiac imaging, nuclear medicine imaging, and obstetrical and gynaecological ultrasound.

From the commencement of the scheme on 1 July 2008 practices providing diagnostic imaging services must be accredited or be registered to become accredited to undertake those services to remain eligible for Medicare benefits.

The scheme is being introduced in two stages. Stage I will conclude on 30 June 2010.

News Update – as at 15 July 2008.
