Better health and ageing for all Australians

Current Issues

Psychology - Clinical Psychology – Specialist Title

Issue

Some psychologists are seeking specialist recognition for clinical psychologists.

Response

Arrangements for specialists registration are set out under section 13 of the National Law and currently apply only to the medical and dental professions and to podiatric surgeons. In relation to psychology, there are area of practice endorsements that recognise particular areas of expertise. Further information regarding these endorsement standards is available on the Psychology Board of Australia website.

There are currently arrangements in place for psychologists to use the specialist title of clinical psychologist. However, the use of specialist titles by clinical psychologists is due to expire later in 2013. The Psychology Board of Australia has committed to review the issue of specialist registration before the transition arrangements conclude, with a view to making submissions to the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council, which has responsibility for approving the professions that maintain a specialist register.

Detailed information regarding the transition arrangements is available on the AHPRA website.
