The National Poliovirus Reference Laboratory produces an annual report on the results of the characterisation of poliovirus isolates in Australia. Prior to 2001 the reports were bi-annual. The National Poliovirus Reference Laboratory at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory is responsible for the characterisation of all poliovirus isolates in Australia. This includes Sabin oral polio vaccine-like viruses, isolated incidentally from nasopharyngeal aspirates taken from recently immunised infants when investigating other illnesses such as bronchiolitis. The laboratory is also responsible for testing stool samples from all patients with acute flaccid paralysis in Australia.
