Online Evidence Based Resources in Aged Care Project

JBI COnNECT – contains a collection of online evidence based resources including an Aged Care node designed specifically to assist nursing staff and others involved in the care of older Australians to deliver high quality care and to pursue better practice.

There is a need to provide health care providers with condensed information based on the best available evidence so that they are able to base their clinical decision making, interventions and activities on the most up-to-date evidence or knowledge available.

The benefits of evidence utilisation are well described in international literature and most modern health systems are increasingly looking to evidence based decision approaches to improve the safety, quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness of health care delivery.

Information technology provides a key mechanism for access into a range of information and resources to support evidence based practice, and while there are some best practice guidelines available, decision support resources and guides for aged care specific interventions and activities that are accessible at the point of care currently do not exist.

JBI COnNECT's aged care node uses web based information technology to enable managers, nurses, care workers, GP's, allied health professionals, residents and their families to access a broad range of online information and resources to support evidence based decision making, leading to improved clinical practices in aged care services. It will raise the profile of evidence based decision making in aged care and lay the groundwork for aged care providers to make better use of evidence in clinical decision making to improve the quality and consistency of the care delivered to older Australians. JBI COnNECT's aged care node is being developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) which is an international, multi-disciplinary organisation that specialises in the utilisation of evidence for health care practice and clinical practice improvement.

A set of free user guides and an instructional DVD are available to assist those interested in subscribing to the service.
