Case Studies

The case studies provide information about the experiences of aged care staff in the implementation of technology, the processes involved, some of the challenges and issues and the benefits. The use of the IT products in these case studies should not be taken as an endorsement of the products by the Australian Government Department of Health & Ageing.

Case Study 1: Incident Management Data Base

Catholic Health Care Services

Reports on the lessons learnt during the development and implementation of a database, known as the Incident Reporting Information Management System (IRIMS), across all 22 facilities operated by Catholic Health Care Services. IRMS provides one point of access to information relating to incidents, complaints and adverse events. The information can be analysed for trends, helping to identify measures for improved health, safety and quality of care to staff, residents and visitors.

Case Study 2: Wireless Care Management System

Lyndoch Warrnambool Inc.

Examines the implementation of iCare’s Clinical and Care Management Solution (CMS) as a clinical care management system. Accessible to nursing staff via touch screen data entry stations and for GPs via the Internet, the system is used for collection, collation and management of clinical and health information and provides a complete picture of residents’ care needs.

Case Study 3: Computerised Care Plans

Djerriwarrh Health Services – Grant Lodge

A commentary on how use of a computerised care plan system (Software Workshop Aged Care) has resulted in improvements to resident care plans whilst meeting aged care standards, legislative and Resident Classification Scale (RCS) requirements. Grant Lodge now has a readily accessible resident database that keeps track of resident details including next of kin, medications, incidents, and activity profile.

Case Study 4: Electronic Prescribing

Raymond Terrace Gardens Nursing Centre

Combines the experiences of GPs and aged care staff who are using Medical Director to limit medication errors through enhanced accuracy of prescriptions and electronic production of clear and legible medication charts. This well-known software package is also being used to generate letters of referral, pathology and x-ray requests.

Sutherland Division of General Practice

Reports on the experiences of those involved in a collaborative effort between SDGP, the John Paul Village Nursing Home & Hostel and Pacific Heights Nursing home to pilot Medical Director to produce positive outcomes for GPs, residential aged care facilities and residents.

Helping Hand Aged Care Inc. Ingle Farm

An investigation of the positive correlations between software use and some indicators of medication safety. The University of South Australia evaluated the use of Medical Director by Helping Hand Aged Care Ingle Farm and the Adelaide North East Division of General Practice. The evaluation showed that residents received improved care through more efficient management of medications.

Case Study 5: Pain Management

Weeroona Senior Citizens Residence and the Kingston Centre

Details the experience of implementing online consultations utilising videoconferencing technologies for managing resident pain. A demonstration of how online consultation supports the use of clinical information in residential aged care facilities by allowing staff to access and share information from resident records during online consultation with specialists, resulting in beneficial outcomes for residents and clinical staff.

Case Study 6: On the Road Paperless Resident Records

Berlasco Court Caring Centre

An account of how implementation of Virtual Practice (VP) as a web-enabled, point of care clinical information system has improved the collection, use and management of resident health and clinical information by increasing accuracy and saving time.

Case Study 7: Internet Cafe

Helping Hand Aged Care Inc., Parafield Gardens

Reports on how the establishment of an Internet Café has provided opportunities for lifelong learning and promoted intergenerational interaction for residents. This initiative has produced many benefits for residents and staff, and has received national awards and international recognition.

Case Study 8: Managing After Hours Care

GP Assist (Tasmania)

Describes how the use of GP Assist, a telephone triage and medical advice service has assisted nursing staff to obtain nursing or medical information and advice after hours whilst relieving GPs of their onerous after hours responsibilities.

North West Melbourne Division of General Practice

Describes the After Hours Primary Medical Care (AHPMC) for Residents of Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACF) Project, which aims to improve after hours medical care for residents through the design, dissemination and use of a ‘GP and Residential Aged Care Kit’ to support GPs and RACF staff.

Case Study 9: Technology Assisted Daily Living

SwanCare Group

Reports on how integrated use of technology for intelligent housing, unobtrusive monitoring and video-conferencing is being used to create a community environment for seniors which fosters confidence, self worth and well-being.

Case Study 10: From Paper to eSystem

Anglican Care

Examines the use of a web-based computer system for integrating clinical care and resident information with financial, maintenance and staff roster information. The eCP (eCarePlan) System has produced a range of benefits for residents and staff as well as attracting positive feedback from assessors during the Accreditation process
