Winners of the 2006 Master Builders Australia National Awards were announced at Parliament House, Canberra on 10 November 2006.

Winner BGC Construction Pty Ltd for Stage 2a, Bentley Park, Bentley, Western Australia
The needs of frail or elderly occupants have been taken into account in the design and construction of 54 villas in Stage 2a of this complex. The dwellings offer the ultimate in adaptable housing. An electronic system has been installed in each home to monitor services and utilities. Steps have been eliminated, with door and garage entrances flush with the finished floor level. Walkthrough doorways are wide enough for a wheelchair. Showers have no hobs and have easily removable shower screens.Purpose Built Dwelling – 10 units and under
Walter Homes Pty Ltd for ‘The Lady Jay’, Epping, New South Wales
This home was designed by Walter Homes and Fyfe Design Services to meet special needs of their mother. The floor plan is an open and free flowing design, specifically suited to the needs of the elderly and handicapped, featuring wide door openings and hallways to accommodate wheelchair access if required. Non slip tiles and many adaptable features are provided in bathrooms.Purpose Built Dwelling – over 10 units – Best Value for Money
Australian Planning Consultants Pty Ltd for Querencia Latrobe City, Moe, Victoria
The design comprises one and two bedroom units grouped in buildings comprising six to eight units per block. Units have separate entrances via a verandah interlinked with connecting pathways. Bathrooms allow for wheelchair access to showers, including options for grab rails in toilets and shower cubicles. The judges considered that this project offered fantastic value for money for the occupants.Multi Unit Development
John Holland Pty Ltd for the Holy Spirit Home, Carseldine, Queensland
The construction of the Holy Spirit Home Carseldine’s new residential wing is the third stage of a 5 stage redevelopment. Stage 3 incorporates 72 self-contained apartments over three levels. Security underground parking with lift access to all units makes it easy for occupants to access their units. All apartments are well designed with many adaptable features, including open floor plans. The complex has many in-house services for residents including laundry facilities, hairdressers, a café and bus services to nearby shopping centres.Purpose Built Dwellings – 10 units and under

This project uses ultra modern design with composite materials and includes features to allow for the occupants to age in place. Special consideration is given to incorporating adaptable housing standards and bathrooms provide flexibility to cater for the future needs of the residents. Winner: Tarragal Glen Constructions for Glengara Retirement Village
Glengara Retirement Village created its master plan to characterise a resort style atmosphere with gardens set on 40 landscaped hectares on the Central Coast of NSW. The two and three bedroom villas all have attached garages and provide spaciousness, privacy, safety and security. The residents have access to a community centre located within the development. The dwellings are designed with great attention to detail to eliminate trip hazards. The entry steps are all flush with external doors and non-slip surfaces. Provision to incorporate adaptable features in the kitchens and bathrooms make these units very attractive.Small To Medium Multi Unit Development
Winner: Project Coordination (Australia) Staverton Place
The builders of this multi storey apartment complex considered secure access a key priority. This is achieved by very accessible ramps to the front doors which open into a wide foyer giving access to the lift which contains all the features required by people with varying disabilities. Each unit has alert systems which inform other occupants in the complex that emergency assistance is required. Within the units, great attention to detail provides adaptable features in the kitchens where bench tops can be lowered. Clever selection of floor materials provides for non-slip and reduced trip hazards.Medium To Large Multi Unit Development
Winner: Grindley Construction for Constitution Hill
This project is considered exceptional in all areas. The design creates an atmosphere for occupants to feel safe and comfortable within their homes. The site provides a high ratio of landscaped gardens and outdoor community areas which creates a unique feeling of spacious and open living within a major capital city. Access to all areas of the complex is made easy by well marked non-slip walkways and driveways. The homes boast plenty of floor area with large balconies and incorporate many adaptable design features cater for all occupants’ needs.
