Gastroenteritis

Information relating to the outbreak of Gastroenteritis in residential aged care homes in Queensland.

In this section:

Dear Directors of Nursing and Care Managers

Gastroenteritis

In the current difficult situation being experienced in Queensland, it is to be expected that there is higher risk of gastroenteritis (gastro). Gastroenteritis is highly infectious and can be easily passed from person to person. It is important to review your infection control plans to ensure the best protection for those living and working in your home.

Outbreaks of gastro are extremely difficult to control, due to the highly infectious nature of the viruses. Early control measures are critical in minimising the impact and spread of gastro. The best means of preventing gastro is to ensure that everyone maintains good hand washing and hygiene practices.

Queensland Public Health is best placed to provide advice and support. In addition there is practical advice on the Queensland Health website, particularly describing the cleaning procedures that will minimise the spread of gastro.

The Department has also developed a set of resources to assist you to manage an outbreak of gastroenteritis. The Gastro Info Gastroenteritis Kit for Aged Care is available electronically on the website of the Department of Health and Ageing.

The Kit contains useful information and resources covering:
  • How to identify the signs and symptoms of a gastroenteritis outbreak;
  • The infection control practices to prevent outbreaks and proper specimen collection and storage; and
  • How to handle food during an outbreak and proper cleaning procedures.
It is very important to follow Queensland Health’s advice related to safety of water, which may include boiling water for drinking and food preparation, and the use of bottled water. Queensland Public Health Units are best placed to advise you for your specific location.

Yours sincerely
