Better health and ageing for all Australians

Encouraging Better Practice in Aged Care Initiative

EBPAC National Roll-out Projects

The EBPAC initiative aims to encourage and support the uptake of evidence-based, person-centred, better practice in Australian Government subsidised aged care services.

Overview

National rollout projects build on the successes of the EBPAC evidence translation projects by making these results available to the entire aged care sector. This activity involves refining resources produced on a small-scale for general use across the sector, then offering training to a maximum number of participants per home, at a number of venues across Australia over a period of months.

This activity responds to recommendations from the National Evaluation Report to make the evidence to support clinical practice and resources developed through the projects more broadly available to those working in residential aged care, and to fund projects which build on previous work from funding rounds.

Two national rollout projects have been funded (2012 -2014) through the Aged Care Service Improvement and Healthy Ageing Grant Fund. Both projects were EBPAC Round Two projects that focused on the areas of Palliative Care and Wound Management.

Palliative Care

Lead Organisation - Queensland Government – QLD Health (Brisbane South Palliative Care Collaborative)

The project National Implementation of the Palliative Approach Toolkit (PA Toolkit) for Residential Aged Care Facilities aims to deliver a national rollout of the PA Toolkit. The PA Toolkit was a resource developed under a Round 2 EBPAC project: Implementation of a comprehensive evidence based palliative approach in Residential Aged Care led by the University Queensland and Blue Care. The PA Toolkit enables effective day-to-day practice by staff caring for residents of aged care facilities at the end of their lives. Queensland Health will deliver the PA Toolkit, plus enhanced resources, to 1000 residential aged care facilities across Australia. National workshops will be held to provide training of the PA Toolkit to RACFs management and staff, educators and external providers such as GPs.

Wound Management

Lead Organisation - Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

The project Improving Wound Management for Residents in Residential Aged Care Facilities aims to deliver a national rollout of the wound management resources developed under a Round 2 EPBAC project: Evidence Based Champions for Skin Integrity Project lead by Queensland University of Technology. The wound management resources are for health professionals and carers in residential aged care, as well as residents and their carers. QUT will review and update the resources for publication and dissemination, deliver ‘train the trainer’ workshops and produce modules for broadcast on the Aged Care Channel.

Previous National Roll-Out

The Better Oral Health in Residential Care Project

In 2010, training and resources developed under The Better Oral Health in Residential Care project were rolled out nationally to all Australian Government funded residential aged care facilities in 2010. Training occurred under the Nursing Home Oral and Dental Health Plan and aimed to provide an increased awareness of oral hygiene issues for staff in daily contact with residents.

The Better Oral Health in Residential Care project was funded through EBPRAC round one and administered by the South Australian Dental Service. The project aimed to identify better practice to enable residents of aged care facilities to have regular oral health assessments and ensure daily oral hygiene was maintained by implementing a health care plan which identified if there was a need for dental treatment.
