A Mature Approach to Staying in Touch
The 'Mature Approach to Staying in Touch' Poster and Brochure are part of the Ambassador for Ageing's positive ageing message.
Staying in touch with family, friends and the wider community is important for your health and wellbeing – both physical and mental. Just as we need to take care of our body by remaining active and watching what we eat, it is important for us to also take care of our social needs and to look after our mental health.
Regrettably, older Australians who are socially isolated tend to experience illness and poor health more often than people who remain in frequent contact with friends and family. Having that regular contact with other people is also important for your mind, helping to keep you mentally active and emotionally engaged with the wider community. It helps to ward off loneliness and more serious problems like depression.
There is more to staying in touch than just having the occasional chat over the backyard fence with an old mate or girlfriend, though these things are very important too. Engaging with friends and family, at the local lawn bowls or golf club, in a choir, at a reading group or through a community organisation helps to give you a better quality of life.
Older Australians have so much to offer, not just to friends and family, but to the wider community. Volunteering builds social capital within communities and makes Australia a better and stronger country in which to live. Whether it is minding the grandkids, assisting a local sporting club, or helping out charities like 'Meals on Wheels' or 'The Salvation Army'. Volunteering builds social capital within communities and makes Australia a better and stronger country in which to live.
Who would have thought that by helping other people you can also help yourself lead a healthier, more active life? Stay in touch with life.
