A Mature Approach to Avoiding Falls

The 'Mature Approach to Avoiding Falls' Poster and Brochure are part of the Ambassador for Ageing's positive ageing message.

As we age we start to notice that some things aren’t what they once were, like our eyesight and hearing. But did you know that our sense of balance also changes as we get older? Unfortunately, falls are the leading cause of injury related hospital admissions for people aged over 65. It’s also thought that at least one-third of people over 65 fall more than once a year but do not require medical attention.

Falls can cause serious injury including fractures to the hip and wrist, head injuries and dislocations. The good news is that most falls can be prevented. Exercise that improves strength and balance is important but as many falls happen at home, your risk of suffering a serious fall can be greatly reduced by taking a few simple precautions inside and outside your home.

There are people aside from family and friends who can help you improve the safety of your home. Your local council or community health centre can help under the Australian Government’s Home and Community Care Program (HACC). They will arrange for someone to meet with you, in your home, and offer support depending on your needs. This includes services such as housekeeping and home maintenance.

Small changes to your surroundings can give you years of happiness and safety in your own home. To find out more information view the 'Mature Approach to Avoiding Falls' Poster and Brochure below. Both publications can be ordered at no cost from National Mailing & Marketing on (02) 6269 1000.
