Launch of Seniors Week Hobart, Tasmania – 30 September 2011

The Ambassador was very impressed with the launch of Seniors Week in Hobart. Organised by COTA, Noeline was part of a full house in the wonderful Theatre Royal, a building of national significance. More than 200 people enjoyed listening to Sing Australia and a performance of Alan Hopgood’s play ‘My Dog Has Stripes’, an exploration of depression, a condition that can strike at any age. During Noeline’s visit to Hobart she participated in a number of radio interviews promoting International Day of Older Persons held 1 October 2011.

RSL Day Club Conference - 22 September 2011

Noeline received a very warm welcome from the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the RSL Day Club team when she attended the RSL Day Club Conference in Sydney. The annual conference is held to provide training and networking opportunities for volunteers.

RSL Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both the ex-service and the wider community. They provide social support and friendship to older people. At the Day Clubs older people can participate in a range of activities, including exercise classes, quizzes, games and entertainment.

Noeline congratulated the volunteers for the great work they do for older people and she is impressed with the RSL for creating such a great initiative which benefits so many older people.

"Today there are more reasons than ever to volunteer. There are a greater variety of opportunities, more ways in which people can help, and there is fantastic satisfaction to be gained from seeing the beneficial affects of your efforts," Noeline said.

Lockyer Valley Branch of National Seniors Australia Event - 2 September 2011

Noeline will long remember her visit to the Lockyer Valley. She was touched by the warm welcome she received and was inspired by some of the locals who have overcome great hardship to rebuild their lives following the devastation of the floods earlier this year.

It was great that people from a variety of National Seniors Australia branches attended the event to hear Noeline speak and they went away inspired by some of the things Noeline was saying. In particular, some people said they would consider taking up computer lessons in the future, and they were impressed to learn from Noeline that the fastest growing group to use the internet are people over the age of 55.

Noeline said what happened in the Lockyer Valley is a great example of the benefits of volunteering. "The people of Lockyer Valley pulled together in dreadful circumstances to help those in need, to clear away the enormous amount of debris as a result of the flooding and then they worked together to rebuild their community. Their service to one another and their community spirit is commendable and we can learn alot from the Lockyer Valley residents."
