Meeting with the Advisory Panel on the Economic Potential of Older Australians - 28 October 2011
Noeline was invited to meet with the Advisory Panel on the Economic Potential of Older Australians in Hobart on 28 October. The Panel members are Everald Compton AM and Prof. Brian Howe AO (former Deputy Prime Minister in the Keating Government). The Australian Government has asked the Panel to consider a number of issues, including opportunities created by the National Broadband Network for senior Australians, and improving workforce participation and investing in the skills and experience of senior Australians.
The Panel wanted to hear from Noeline about the issues older people are talking to her about during her travels around the country promoting healthy active ageing.
One of the issues of concern to both Noeline and the Panel is discrimination against older workers. Contrary to popular belief among some employers, older workers make valuable employees. Studies reveal that older workers are more loyal to a business, and they have less sick leave and reduced levels of workplace injury. The Panel discussed ways to dispel the myths about older workers and they were very pleased to hear that Noeline endeavours to do this on a regular basis.
The meeting was considered very worthwhile and Noeline is looking forward to seeing the Panel's report to the Government later this year.

Gannawarra Shire - Meals on Wheels 40th Birthday Event - 13 October
Noeline enjoyed the three and a half hour drive through beautiful Victoria to get to the delightful town of Cohuna to attend the Gannawarra Shire's Meals on Wheels 40th Birthday event. The Council hosted a delicious lunch to celebrate the wonderful work of volunteers. Guests were entertained by a local band and there were a few people who told stories about when Meals on Wheels first started in the area all those years ago.
Noeline was made feel very welcome and during her presentation she congratulated the volunteers for the great work they do, and she encouraged the audience to spread the word about volunteering to their family and friends.
"I'm sure the older people who enjoy the delicious food prepared by Meals on Wheels also enjoy the friendships gained from having regular contact with the volunteers," Noeline said.
