Barwon Health Staff Forum : Your future, your life: Caring for our workforce - 19 March 2013

Barwon Health was formed in 1998 and it is now one of the largest regional health services in Australia, providing health services which cover the full spectrum from primary care, community services, aged care, rehabilitation, mental health, emergency and acute care.

Barwon Health has a large workforce, many of whom are mature aged workers. Barwon Health wanted to hold a staff forum to provide workers with a broad range of information and tools so they are better able to make positive decisions as they progress through life. They also wanted to empower their staff to plan for their futures.

"I was very impressed that Barwon Health organised such a worthwhile forum for their staff, and I was really pleased to see so many staff attend the event," Noeline said.

"There were a variety of speakers at the event, including a psychologist who talked about the importance of a healthy work / life balance. He also talked about planning for the future, because as we all know, when we leave the workforce it can be a traumatic or anxious time for us if we have not put in place a plan for our retirement.

"We also heard from a physiotherapist who talked about keeping active and maintaining our balance as we age with regular exercise."

During Noeline's speech she focused on some of the things people can do after they retire, including volunteering, joining a social group or becoming a member of a local U3A.

U3A Pine Rivers AGM and Social Information Day - 15 March 2013

The organisers of this event were thrilled that Noeline was able to speak at their event and they had to turn people away because she drew a capacity crowd.

"What a lovely group of people there are at the Pine Rivers U3A and they are certainly passionate about the U3A fraternity,' Noeline said.

"As I travel around the country I am always encouraged by the level of enthusiasm of older people in pursuing new challenges while enjoying the social connectedness that participation in the U3A organisation brings."

Benetas - Launch of Research Report ‘Women at Work – Voices of Older Women’ - 7 March 2013

Benetas, a not-for-profit provider of residential aged and community care services in Victoria, invited Noeline to be guest speaker at the launch of an important research report titled 'Women at Work - Voices of Older Women'.

The research looked at the perceptions of older women regarding their experiences in employment throughout their lives, and it examined what these older women think about the opportunities available to younger women in today's world.

"What a valuable piece of research," Noeline said.

"Things have certainly changed over the years in regard to women and employment, and I am pleased to say there are many more opportunities for women today which is a really good thing.

"I remember when I was growing up women had to leave the workforce if they got married and had children, and many women were in menial types of roles. Fortunately today things are very different, with many women being employed in senior positions in both the private and public sectors," Noeline said.

Noeline finished off her speech by congratulating older women because they have helped engender positive changes in the employment opportunities for women.

Queanbeyan City Council's Moving Memories Seniors Event - 1 March 2013

The city of Queanbeyan NSW is celebrating it's 175th birthday this year and as part of the celebrations the Council put on a screening of local historic film footage for the city's older residents . They also screened a feature film called 'Around the Boree Log', which was first released in 1925 when the Australian film industry was in its infancy. The film was based on a poem by Yass born author John O'Brien.

Noeline found a review written about the screening of the film in 1925 at the Star Theatre in Queanbeyan and the audience was thrilled when she read it out.

"I also reminded people that it is very important they write their life story," Noeline said.

"I know people of my age were told not to have tickets on themselves while they were growing up but everyone has an interesting story to tell even if they don't think they have.

"Writing your life story is not just important for historical purposes but it is also important that our families know where we came from, who we are and what we did with our lives.

"And you don't need to be a professional writer to record your story, just join a U3A and hopefully they will have a writing course that could help you," Noeline said.
