World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2012 - Seniors Rights Victoria and Frankston City Council Lunch Concert - 15 June 2012
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is about raising awareness of elder abuse in a coordinated effort around the world. To acknowledge this important day the Frankston City Council and Seniors Rights Victoria got together to put on a lunch and concert for local seniors.
Noeline was invited to come along and talk about respect for older people, and during her speech she highlighted the valuable contribution older people have made, and continue to make to our nation.
"I believe older people should be treated as valued members of our society and I think it is our collective responsibility to ensure older people live safely and with dignity,' Noeline said.
"Sadly elder abuse does exist and it is a terrible aspect of some older people’s lives. It comes in many forms including violence, neglect, exploitation, fraud and verbal or psychological abuse.
"As Ambassador for Ageing I believe older people should be able to pursue opportunities to enable them to reach their full potential, and they should have access to the economic, cultural, spiritual and recreational resources of our community.
"As a society we must work hard to eliminate any incidence of abuse, neglect, mistreatment or exploitation of older people – either as individuals or as a group. We must assure dignified, supportive life circumstances for every older person, not just because it is the right thing to do, but also because we want older people to live in safety and feel valued members of the Australian community," Noeline said.

NSW Falls Prevention Network Forum - Sydney - 1 June 2012
The NSW Falls Prevention Network Forum held in Sydney was well attended by health and medical professionals and Noeline was pleased to be asked to officially open the event. The NSW Falls Prevention Network was set up in 1993 for the purpose of supporting a network of clinical and non-clinical people who are involved with falls prevention. A major aim of the network is to promote falls prevention as a key health issue.
"One of the goals of this important network is to reduce the incidence of preventable fall injuries among older people who live in NSW," Noeline said.
"Another aim of the network is to increase public awareness about the risk factors and consequences of falls.
"The speakers at the forum were all experts in the fall prevention arena. They were there to share the latest research and highlight strategies that can help reduce the incidence of falls among older people.
"As Ambassador for Ageing I understand the terrible impact of falls on older people and forums such as this are very worthwhile in the battle to reduce fall injuries among senior Australians," Noeline said.
A recent initiative of the NSW Falls Prevention Program, which is part of the Clinical Excellence Commission, was the creation of a flyer which features Noeline. The flyer showcases three things that people can do to promote healthy bones and reduce the risk of falling causing injury or breaking a bone - namely: (1) exercise - which is important in maintaining healthy bones, (2) calcium - which is essential for building and maintaining bone strength, and (3) Vitamin D - which is important for muscle strength and absorption of calcium into our bones.
