Guest Speaker – Active Kyogle – North Coast Health Services, NSW– 13 December 2010

During October seniors from the Kyogle Shire, NSW, were challenged to get fit and healthy.
Participants of the Active Kyogle Super Seniors Health Challenge, an initiative funded by the Australian Government, were encouraged to achieve four goals each day –

(1) 10 minutes or more of balance and strength exercises;
(2) 30 minutes or more of moderate physical activity;
(3) consume three serves of calcium-rich foods (such as dairy and soy products); and
(4) get five minutes of sunlight before 10am or after 3pm.

To celebrate the success of the program Noeline was invited to be guest speaker at their end of challenge party. During the event Noeline was treated to a dance routine by some of the challenge participants - the performers looked great in their lycra outfits dancing to 'Let's Get Physical' by Olivia Newton John.

Noeline was touched by the warm hospitality she received not only from the organisers of the event, but also from the participants of the challenge as well as local residents who she met while walking around the town.

Narrabri Probus Club Event

The Narrabri Probus Club put on a special lunch for its members and guests to celebrate Christmas and the end of a great year.

During Noeline's speech she talked about growing older in rural and regional Australia. She talked about our ageing population and how older populations in rural areas are growing at a faster rate than they are in metropolitan cities. Noeline also said that although there are challenges for cities and towns in rural Australia regarding their ageing populations, research shows us that older Australians in these settings are greatly invested in their communities, particularly through volunteering.

Noeline finished off by saying how much she admires people living in rural and regional Australia - 'I admire your sense of community, your work ethic, your love of the land, your support for each other during the tough times and your strength of character and determination."

Visit to Narrabri Men's Shed

Noeline was thrilled to be asked to visit the Narrabri Men's Shed and she was impressed by the active, dynamic group of men who are committed to their club.

Men’s Sheds are emerging all around Australia. At a men’s shed you will see men restoring furniture, restoring bicycles for local schools, fixing lawn mowers or making a kids cubby house for Camp Quality to raffle. You will see tea-bags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk. You will probably also see an area where men can learn to cook for themselves or they can learn how to contact their families by computer.

Good health involves feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. A Men’s Shed gives a man a safe and busy environment where he can undertake a variety of tasks in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship.

What a warm welcome Noeline received from the members of U3A Hobart when she attended their Christmas party in early December.

U3A Hobart is a very active club and well over 100 people attended the Christmas function. U3A Hobart's charter is fostering a co-operative learning community for retired and semi-retired people on a non-profit basis. They encourage the pursuit of learning in an environment which is free of entrance qualifications or assessments.

Noeline congratulated the guests for understanding the benefits of life long learning and she encouraged them to continue staying connected to life.
