Invitation to Apply for places and grants

Advertisements inviting applications for 10,447 places, over $44 million in capital grants (as detailed below) and Community Care and/or Flexible Care Grants appeared in major metropolitan and leading regional newspapers on Saturday 8 November 2008, and in selected ethno-specific newspapers in the following days.

Prospective applicants will be able to contact the Department's Aged Care Information Line on 1800 500 853, (from 8.30am (AEDT) on Monday 10 November 2008), to obtain an Application Kit. The Kit includes the 2008-09 ACAR Essential Guide (incorporating the 2008-09 Regional Distribution of Aged Care Places) and a CD-ROM containing all the relevant 2008-09 application forms.

All applications must be received within the Department of Health and Ageing by 5.00pm on Friday 19 December 2008.

Places made available

More than 10,400 places, with an estimated annual recurrent funding value of more than $337 million, have been made available through the 2008-09 Aged Care approvals Round. They comprise 7,663 residential places, 1,809 Community Aged Care places, 652 Extended Aged Care at Home packages and 323 Extended Aged Care at Home Dementia packages. Details of the places made available are contained in Table 1.

In addition to the places, up to $44.5 million in capital grants will be made available to enable new or existing services to undertake necessary capital works programs where applicants are able to demonstrate they are unable to meet the full cost of the works from all other sources of finance.

Note: * The out-year figures in this table are indicative only. Prospective applicants should be aware that it is highly likely these indicative figures will be revised. There are a number of factors that will impact directly on the indicative releases including:
      • possible revised annual population projections;
      • allocations to be made as a result of the Zero Real Interest Loan initiative (in both 2008 and 2009);
      • allocations to be made in this and future Aged Care Approvals Rounds;
      • the actual rate at which previously allocated places become operational; and
      • the results of the reviews into the aged care planning ratios and improvements to the Aged Care Approvals Round process.
