Aged Care Boost: Over 11,000 New Places

On 15 December 2005, the former Minister for Ageing, the Hon Julie Bishop MP announced the outcome of the 2005 Aged Care Approvals Round. In this initial announcement almost 11,000 new places were allocated nation wide.

Following further allocations, aged care across Australia will now be increased to over 11,000 new places – to more than 228,000 government-allocated places.

The Australian Government will provide more than $253 million in annual recurrent funding for the 5,227 residential places and 5,874 community places which have been allocated nationally.

The community places include:
  • 4,307 new Community Aged Care Packages to support people in their communities;
  • 900 new Extended Aged Care at Home packages to provide people higher-level care in their own homes; and
  • 667 new Extended Aged Care at Home Dementia packages to help people living with a diagnosis of dementia that contributes to their high care needs remain in their own homes.
Ms Bishop said that in addition to the new places, over $40 million has been made available in capital grants to help the nation’s aged care services build or maintain quality accommodation for older Australians in need of residential care.

A summary of the place and grant allocations are contained in the following Table.
