Health Workforce Data

Health workforce data is available through the Department of Health’s online data tabulation tool. The online data tool allows users to develop their own tables and graphs using the National Health Workforce Dataset (NHWDS) and Clinical Placements Dataset. Registration data together with information gathered through a voluntary workforce survey captured at the time of annual registration by a health professional is available from the NHWDS on the medical, nursing and midwifery, dental and the eleven allied health professions registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Additional information is added to the tool over time as it becomes available.

Clinical Placements data is also available through the online tool. The Department of Health conducts an annual collection of clinical training placements from universities in Australia for professional-entry students in the medical, nursing, dentistry and allied health disciplines. This dataset contains detailed information on the clinical setting of the placements for each of the health disciplines, and the geographic location of the placement. Reliable, up-to-date information on the volume and type of clinical training placement activity taking place across Australia is vital in workforce modelling and planning. The survey of clinical training placements provides policy makers with national statistics on the nature and extent of the higher education supply of health professionals to Australia’s health workforce.
