Better health and ageing for all Australians

Maternity Services Review

Maternity Services Advisory Group

The Maternity Services Advisory Group (the Advisory Group) provides advice to the Department in relation to maternity services reform.

The Advisory Group is co-chaired by Professor John Horvath (former Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer) and Ms Rosemary Bryant (Commonwealth Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer) and consists of members representing major organisations with an interest in Australia’s maternity services. The size and composition of the group is intended to allow a variety of views with a collegial approach.

Terms of Reference

The Advisory Group will provide a forum for discussion of maternity services issues from a cross-disciplinary perspective. At the request of the Department, the group may provide advice and comment on maternity related matters, including:

    • progress and issues in the implementation of the Improving Maternity Services package;
    • communication material about the package;
    • the evaluation of the implementation of the package and the impact of the new measures; and
    • the development of the National Maternity Services Plan.

The Advisory Group meets in person around three times per year over a two year period. Any issues that need to be addressed out of session are handled by email and/or teleconference.
