MBS Primary Care Items
Healthy Kids Check Resource Kit
The Australian Government aims to improve the health and well-being outcomes for Australian children by encouraging early detection of lifestyle risk factors and physical health issues, and facilitating early intervention strategies through the Healthy Kids Check Medicare items. This initiative aligns with the broader policy agenda of optimising outcomes for children through attention to health, learning and development.
The MBS Healthy Kids Check can be delivered by a GP or a practice nurse, and includes health indicators such as height, weight, eyesight and hearing assessments. The Healthy Kids Check is claimable at the same time as the four-year old immunisation.
The Australian Government also provides funding to State and Territory governments to strengthen linkages between the MBS Healthy Kids Check and state-funded child health assessment services, and to further promote the provision of health assessment services to children who are about to enter school.
The Healthy Kids Check Resource Kit contains information for medical practitioners, practice nurses and registered Aboriginal health workers concerning the Healthy Kids Check for 4 yr old children. The kit contains fact sheets, a checklist and ‘Get Set 4 Life – habits for healthy kids’ guide, updated with changes to the MBS item numbers resulting from the MBS Review.
