The Australian-American Health Policy Fellowship

The Australian-American Health Policy Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for outstanding, mid-career U.S. professionals – academics, government officials, clinical leaders, decision makers, and journalists – to spend up to 10 months in Australia conducting research and working with leading Australian health policy experts on issues relevant to both countries. The program is administered in Australia by the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation at the University of Technology, Sydney.

The Fellowship is structured around mutual areas of interest for example, health care quality and safety, the private/public mix of insurance and providers, fiscal sustainability of health systems, management of health care delivery, health care workforce and investment in preventive care strategies.

The Program reciprocates the existing Harkness Fellowship Program sponsored by the American philanthropic foundation, the Commonwealth Fund.

The 2011-12 Fellow was Dr Gary Freed. Dr Freed who is a paediatrician based at the University of Michigan.

Dr Freed’s project was titled: "Assessing the Current and Future Adequacy of Primary and Subspecialty Care for Children in Australia". During his time in Australia Dr Freed was based at the Australian Health Care Workforce Institute at the University of Melbourne. His project concluded in December 2011. He expects to publish a number of manuscripts based on his research.

There will not be a Fellow for 2012-13. Applications for the 2013-14 Fellowship will be sought by the Commonwealth Fund in the first half of 2012.
