Diabetes at a glance

Diabetes at a glance

For our bodies to work properly we need to convert glucose (sugar) from food into energy. A hormone called insulin is essential for the conversion of glucose into energy. In people with diabetes, insulin is no longer produced or not produced in sufficient amounts by the body.

The Government is funding a range of initiatives aimed at preventing the onset of diabetes, and ensuring that people affected by the disease have access to affordable, high quality treatment for their condition. Initiatives include programs such as the Diabetes Care Project, a three year pilot of a new model of healthcare delivery and the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) which aims to ensure that people with diabetes have access to products and services that help them effectively self-manage their condition.
