Information for Providers

Approval as a Qualified Practitioner - Audiologist

Qualified practitioners are audiologists employed by hearing service providers contracted with the Australian Government Hearing Services Program.

Qualified Practitioners are audiologists who have met the Office’s requirements for registration and may therefore practice under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program (the Program). Qualified Practitioners must be employed by hearing service providers contracted with the Office under the Program to provide clinical services to eligible clients in accordance with the Hearing Rehabilitation Outcomes set by the Office.

To be approved as a Qualified Practitioner, applicants must be employed by a contracted service provider and have met the Office’s requirements for Provisional Audiologists within two years of being registered as Provisional.

When applying for Qualified Practitioner status, the following documentation must be provided in support of an application:

  • evidence of an Australian University Degree in Audiology; and
  • if a member of ASA, evidence of Full membership, including a Certificate of Clinical Practice or if a member of ACAud, evidence of Ordinary membership.

Applicants who are not members of ASA or ACAud will have to meet the requirements of the Professional Qualifications Advisory Committee which will include passing an exam (the cost of which is the responsibility of the applicant).

Overseas-trained audiologists

All overseas-trained applicants are required to be members of an Approved Professional Body. Under the Hearing Services Rules of Conduct 2005, both ASA and ACAud are Approved Professional Bodies (APB).

It is advisable to contact ASA or ACAud in the first instance if an overseas-trained audiologist wishes to be registered with the Office. Given that ASA and ACAud follow specific processes in assessing overseas-trained hearing health practitioners, prospective applicants should take into account these processes and associated timeframes when considering applying for registration with the Office.
